Carson Nielsen sees himself as a work in progress on the football field. It's one reason the prep sophomore considers Iowa a prime option for college.

The standout 2026 offensive lineman from Waterloo (IA) West High visited the Hawkeyes' junior day this past weekend. What he heard from offensive line coach George Barnett was what he wanted.

"I think I’d be a good fit on coach Barnett’s O-Line because I just agree with all his beliefs when it comes to football," Nielsen told HN. "I’m ready to be developed, and that's his main thing, development."

Nielsen (6-7, 275) enjoyed the overall vibe he felt while attending the junior day.

"I loved just being around the people there. They really answered all my questions I had. I also loved getting to talk to coach (Kirk) Ferentz and coach Barnett a lot," he said.

The Hawkeyes are facing plenty of competition for Nielsen. In addition to Iowa, he reports scholarship offers from Iowa State, Kansas State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and North Dakota State. He also has a Notre Dame visit under his belt.

"I’m approaching the process pretty open minded and trying to consider everyone I talk to. I definitely have schools that I would highly consider, though. Schools that are standing out to me right now are Iowa, K-State and Mizzou."

Nielsen visited Iowa for a game last season. He took in a Hawkeye bowl practice during December.

"I like the people at Iowa and the coaches. I also love the fans and the culture there. I grew up watching them, so it’s pretty cool to be this involved now," he said.

Nielsen stands out during his junior highlights, literally and figuratively. He plays with good balance, boasts quick feet and can overpower opponents.

Even though he has more than half of his high school years to go, Nielsen has a college major in mind.

"I want to be a strength coach, so I would want to study things like Kinesiology and Sports Science," he said.
