Oklahoma Kicker Enters Transfer Portal After Two Seasons in Norman

One of the Sooners' backup kickers entered the transfer portal on Wednesday after appearing in two games last season.

Oklahoma redshirt sophomore kicker Gavin Marshall has entered the transfer portal, multiple sources reported on Wednesday.

Marshall appeared in two games for the Sooners last season, recording two made PATs against Arkansas State and a touchback against Tulsa.

Hailing from Frisco, TX, Marshall was a walk on at OU in the 2022 recruiting class. Marshall competed for the starting kicker spot with veteran Zach Schmit, but was injured for the majority of his redshirt freshman season.

"He has (been in the mix). He's been hurt most of the year, unavailable," Brent Venables said at a midweek press conference in November.

Marshall is the second Sooners' kicker to transfer out of Norman since the 2023 campaign ended, joining Atoka, OK, product Redi Mustafaraj. Marshall will have four years of eligibility remaining.

Over the offseason, the Sooners added talented freshman kicker Liam Evans from Moore, OK, who comes to Oklahoma as an early enrollee.

OU also brought in Tyler Keltner, a transfer from Florida State who had a solid career at East Tennessee State before spending one year with the Seminoles.

The Sooners also have a new special teams analyst after Jay Nunez left to take over Alabama special teams. Recently, Venables and company hired Doug Deakin, a former special teams coach at San Diego State, to fill Nunez's role.

With Marshall now out of the picture, Oklahoma will have a three-man battle between Schmit, Evans and Keltner for the starting kicker spot heading into the 2024 season.

After a shaky performance from Schmit last year, the Sooners will be looking for more consistency, especially in clutch time, from whoever wins the job during spring and fall camp.
