#9 Penn State vs. Maryland Prediction, Best Bets & Odds: Sat, 11/4 on FOX

USATSI_21771032

The Penn State Nittany Lions travel to College Park, Maryland for a 3 PM ET matchup this Saturday on FOX. PSU’s last game came down to the wire, but I nailed my Indiana vs. Penn State best bet in that matchup, so I’ve had a great feel for this Nittany Lions program and stated how last week’s game was a possible let-down spot. That was shown with Indiana scoring 24 points, and I’m slightly worried about PSU’s defense this weekend. With that win, I’m 5-2 this season and recently cashed my pick for UMASS vs. Penn State.

Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Maryland Terrapins Prediction for Saturday's Big Ten Matchup, 11/4

The Penn State Nittany Lions didn’t play their best last weekend against the Indiana Hoosiers, but they still managed to secure a 33-24 win. This was the first time PSU’s defense allowed more than 20 points this season, but they were playing without edge rushers Chop Robinson and Amin Vanover. If Robinson is back in the lineup, he’ll have added motivation to do well, as he began his career with the Terrapins before transferring to Penn State last season.

The story for Saturday will focus on Maryland’s offense, as they average 418.4 yards (48th in the country) and 32.6 points per game (37th in the country). QB Taulia Tagovailoa already eclipsed his passing TD mark from last season (18), and the senior QB has 12 TDs and just two interceptions in Maryland’s five home contests this year. If he can take care of the ball, Maryland can keep this game close, but Penn State leads the country in turnover margin (12).

Penn State’s defense didn’t play up to their standards this past weekend, as Indiana threw for 269 yards and three TDs. This was against a Hoosiers offense averaging 206.9 passing yards per game (93rd in the country) and 18.6 points per contest (T-121st). I anticipate a response from Penn State, but I’m not confident that their secondary can slow the Terrapins passing attack. However, I do think the Nittany Lions offense can exploit a shaky Maryland defense, so Saturday’s game could turn into a shootout.

Penn State vs. Maryland Best Bets & Expert Picks

Maryland’s defense is giving up 24.6 PPG to Big Ten oppositions, but in their last three conference games against Northwestern (33), Illinois (27) and Ohio State (37), that number has increased to 32.3 PPG. Penn State should have no issues scoring 30+ on Saturday, as they’ve eclipsed this mark in seven of their eight contests (38.9 PPG). However, I anticipate a response from the hosts, so my first Penn State vs. Maryland prediction is on Maryland Team Total O20.5 points (-108 at FanDuel).

The Nittany Lions secondary has been exposed two straight weeks, and Maryland has 24+ points in all five home games this season, averaging 37.8 PPG. Although those games came against Towson, Charlotte, Virginia, Indiana and Illinois, I do think there are weaknesses in PSU’s secondary to exploit. Although they should score three TDs or more, the second half of my Penn State vs. Maryland prediction is on Penn State ML (-350 at FanDuel). There’s too much on the line for James Franklin, as they’ll host #2 Michigan next week and cannot afford to drop a game against an inferior opponent.

The Nittany Lions showed they can be beaten in recent weeks, but Saturday’s game seems like the perfect opportunity for the offense to explode, and the defense should be able to do enough to hold the Terrapins in the second half. The way I’m using my Penn State vs. Maryland best bets is in a Same Game Parlay featuring Maryland Team Total O20.5 points and Penn State ML (+194 at FanDuel).

Penn State Injury Report vs. Maryland

I mentioned it already, but the statuses of edge rushers Chop Robinson and Amin Vanover are worth monitoring leading up to Saturday, as James Franklin didn’t provide an update during his Tuesday press conference. Additionally, WR Harrison Wallace III and RT Caedan Wallace left the Indiana game with injuries and didn’t return.

Franklin didn’t provide an update on Harrison Wallace, but he did say that he expects Caedan Wallace to return, but backup RT Drew Shelton will likely start or play a good chunk of minutes. Overall, Robinson is the biggest name to watch this Saturday, but I expect the Nittany Lions to take care of business with or without the future first-round pick.
