Celtics Send Malcolm Brogdon to Trail Blazers in Jrue Holiday Trade

Brogdon has reportedly been traded from the Boston Celtics to the Portland Trail Blazers as part of a package for Jrue Holiday

Malcolm Brogdon is on the move.

The former Virginia basketball star has reportedly been traded from the Boston Celtics to the Portland Trail Blazers as part of a package surrounding Jrue Holiday. Per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics are trading Malcolm Brogdon, Robert Williams III, and two first round picks to the Blazers in return for Holiday, who was traded to Portland on Wednesday as part of a blockbuster three-team trade that sent Damian Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Brogdon was initially involved in a three-team trade back in June that would have sent him to the Los Angeles Clippers, but that trade fell apart and it seemed the Celtics were no longer actively looking to trade him. Then, when Jrue Holiday became available, Boston made a move to acquire him and it only made sense that Brogdon was made part of that trade package.

What remains to be seen is whether the Trail Blazers will hang onto Brogdon. Portland is in the midst of a massive rebuild after trading franchise player Damian Lillard. The Blazers have a few promising young guards in Scoot Henderson, Anfernee Simons, and Shaedon Sharpe and their development will be the organization's top priority. As a veteran guard, Brogdon's best fit would be with a contending team as a role player or sixth man, similar to the role he played with the Celtics. If a contender expresses interest in acquiring Brogdon, he could be on the move again before the season begins on October 24th.

In his 7th season in the NBA, Brogdon averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists on 48.4% shooting from the floor and 44.4% from three-point range. Brogdon was named the 2022-2023 NBA Sixth Man of the Year, becoming just the second player in NBA history to win both the Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year awards in his career. This trade sends Brogdon to his fourth different team for his eighth season in the NBA.
