Former Virginia basketball star Malcolm Brogdon was named the 2022-2023 NBA Sixth Man of the Year on Thursday, becoming the first UVA basketball alum to win the award.

Brogdon received 60 of the 100 first-place votes for the award, as he edged fellow finalists Immanuel Quickley of the New York Knicks and Bobby Portis of the Milwaukee Bucks.

In his first season with the Boston Celtics, Brogdon averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game while shooting 48.4% from the floor and 44.4% from beyond the arc. Leading one of the best bench units in the league, Brogdon helped the Celtics earn the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.

“These are team awards," Brogdon said after it was announced that he was a finalist for the award. "It takes a team to get an All-NBA, an All-Star, Sixth Man, Defensive Player, so that would be great for our organization. It’s always good to get recognition for what you’re doing, for your sacrifice, for your work. It’s definitely nice.”

Brogdon is just the second player in NBA history to win both the Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year awards, joining Mike Miller (2001, 2006). He was named the 2016-2017 Rookie of the Year following his first NBA season with the Milwaukee Bucks.
