Wisconsin’s quarterback room took a bit of a hit on Wednesday with redshirt freshman Myles Burkett entering the NCAA Transfer Portal. Burkett, who saw limited action for Wisconsin in 2022 but did not see the field this season, has decided to explore new opportunities elsewhere. His decision comes in a context where Tanner Mordecai and Braedyn Locke took all of the snaps for the Badgers in 2023.

“It has been a true blessing to be a part of such a special group these past 2 years. Thank you to Coach Chryst, Coach Fickell, and Coach Longo for allowing for to be myself and for shaping me into the man and player I am today,” Burkett said on "X" (formerly Twitter). “With that being said, it is time for me to take on a new challenge, and I will be entering the transfer portal with 3 years of eligibility.”

"Thank you, Wisconsin."

Implications for Wisconsin's Football Program

Myles Burkett’s decision to enter the transfer portal is significant for both his career and the Wisconsin football program. His departure highlights the competitive nature of college football, where playing time and career progress can often lead athletes to seek new environments. For Wisconsin, Braedyn Locke will likely be the starter in 2024, though they will also have true freshman Mabrey Mettauer, who is the No. 49 ranked QB in the Class of 2024. In addition, the Badgers could look to add another quarterback via the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Personally, I think this decision opens the door to new opportunities and challenges for Burkett, offering him a chance to further develop his skills and career. In reality, he was never going to play for the Badgers, so transferring was the right move for him. For the Wisconsin Badgers, it is a moment to reassess and potentially restructure their quarterback strategy moving forward. It will be interesting to see who is Wisconsin's starting quarterback when Week 1 of the 2024 season rolls around.
