The Pittsburgh Pirates did a very good thing on Wednesday morning.

They signed outfielder Bryan Reynolds to an eight-year extension worth $106.75 million. You can read about the particulars of the deal here.

Our own Brady Farkas of 'The Payoff Pitch' podcast discussed in this weeks episode why the deal was such a home run for the Pirates.

1) Bryan Reynolds is really good. It's as simple as that. If you're going to be a good baseball team, you need good baseball players, and Reynolds is just that.

Per Danny Vietti of CBS Sports....

Bryan Reynolds ranks among qualified NL CF since 2022:

• 32 HR (1st)

 • .474 SLG (1st)

• 90.6 avg exit velocity (1st)

• 44.2% hard hit (1st)

• 61 XBH (t-1st)

• 297 total bases (1st)

• 80 RBI (2nd)

• .266 BA (2nd)

• .815 OPS (2nd)

• 126 wRC+ (2nd)

• 3.4 fWAR (3rd)

2) The Pirates are sending the right message to everyone. They are sending the right message to current players that you'll be rewarded if you play well, the right message to prospects that if you perform the organization will value you, and fans, that they finally care about winning.

The Pirates haven't won even 80 games since 2018 and haven't made the playoffs since 2015.

They are out to a surprising 16-8 record and lead the National League Central by one game over the Brewers.

The Pirates will play the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at 6:35 p.m. ET.
