In a stunning development, former top-20 prospect Cristian Pache is likely to be designated for assignment, and the Athletics are exploring trade opportunities involving the 24-year-old outfielder.

Per manager Mark Kotsay, Pache won't make the Opening Day roster. Because he's out of options, he's likely to be designated for assignment and the A's will take extra time to explore a trade possibility.

Pache was one a key return in the deal that sent Matt Olson to Atlanta in the 2021-2022 offseason but didn't perform in Oakland, hitting just .166 with a .218 on-base percentage in 91 games. The A's went on to lose an American League-worst 102 games.

Pache also struggled in AAA last season, posting a .248 average in Las Vegas, and he used up his final option year.

Per reports, the A's appear to be ready to break camp with Ramon Laureano, Estuery Ruiz (acquired this offseason), Brett Rooker and Conner Capel in the outfield.

Given his former top prospect pedigree, young age and elite defensive profile, I'd imagine that a team will take a chance on Pache, but then again, if he can't crack it in Oakland, where the A's are likely to be one of the worst teams in the sport, you have to wonder which team will take the chance.

A contending team could take a look at Pache as a fourth OF and use him for defensive purposes. He was responsible for five defensive runs saved in 2022.

The A's open up the season Thursday at the Angels. Kyle Muller will pitch against Shohei Ohtani.
