After winning 90 games and advancing to the playoffs for the first time in 20 years a season ago, it would be reasonable to expect the Seattle Mariners to build on that in 2023.

Thus far, through five games, the M's have done anything but. They dropped three of four in their opening series against the Cleveland Guardians and lost the opener against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.

Fastball on FanNation writer and "The Payoff Pitch" podcast host, Brady Farkas, discussed the M's struggles through the first five games and you can watch it below.

His frustration centers around three points:

1) The Mariners have lost four of their first five home games. With the balanced schedule comes increased travel for the Mariners and they can ill-afford to be losing these games at home.

2) The Mariners have started slowly each of the last two years and have needed to play catch up in order to get into playoff contention. It would be nice to play from a position of strength for once.

3) The Astros are at their weakest right now with Jose Altuve out and Hunter Brown acclimating to the rotation. If the M's are to make up the 16-game difference in the AL West standings this year, now is the time to capitalize on it.

The Mariners continue the series against the Angels on Tuesday as Luis Castillo takes on Jose Suarez at 9:40 p.m. ET. The two teams meet on Wednesday afternoon at 4:10 p.m. ET with Shohei Ohtani going against Chris Flexen, who starts in place of the injured Robbie Ray.
