The leading receiver was Jamarye Joiner. As everyone knows Joiner was recruited as a quarterback and actually started one game under center a year ago. While many believed Joiner was better suited to be a wide receiver or defensive back, he was at one time a 4-star quarterback recruit and was rated as the No. 17 dual threat quarterback in the 2018 class.

Despite bobbling a few passes, Joiner had four grabs for 72 yards and a score.

Tayvian Cunningham was a late addition to the recruiting class. The JUCO receiver did not commit to Arizona until late May and did not appear to have any other offers. Rivals rated him as a 2-star recruit and he put up modest numbers at Sacramento City C.C. but was a track standout with excellent speed.

Cunningham also had four catches for 65 yards against Hawaii.

Cunningham’s one offer is one more than Stanley Berryhill’s recruiting profiles lists. Although he had some interest by smaller schools, Berryhill’s best opportunities were walk-on roles with Arizona and ASU. The move paid off, as Berryhill was awarded a scholarship last August, but not many would have pegged him to have a bigger role than most of the scholarship players on the roster.

Berryhill led the Wildcats with 92 yards on just three catches. He also had a score.

Drew Dixon was recruited as a wide receiver, but had a lot to learn about the position coming out of Sabino High School. Dixon was the Sabercats’ starting quarterback, running the read option, but also played wide receiver, defensive back and running back. Dixon was a great athlete who had to learn the art of receiver and by all accounts put in the work to crack the rotation.

Brian Casteel was a 3-star recruit coming out of Pasadena, but before the Hawaii game only had one catch in two seasons. Casteel was a guy the coaches kept talking about but had yet to make a real impact. His three catches last Saturday were a sign that things may be looking up.

Just two other wide receivers saw action in the game. Senior Cedric Peterson started the game and Tre Adams also got reps. Thomas Reid III was also listed on the participation chart but as far as I can tell he only played on special teams.

Boobie Curry and Jaden Mitchell, who appeared on the Hawaii depth chart, did not see action in the game according to the participation chart.
