Former Razorbacks Defensive Lineman Going Home

Taurean Carter returning to SMU for final year, getting back to Texas roots for finish

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Injuries certainly didn't help defensive lineman Taurean Carter achieve goals in five seasons with Arkansas. Now he's going back home to his native Texas for a bonus season, announcing he's transferring to SMU.

Carter was part of the talented players from Mansfield, Texas, that former coach Chad Morris rounded up. He played in 33 games with five starts. He did not play in 2019 during a redshirt season or in 2022 with a knee injury. He collected 60 tackles, including 6.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks, to go with a pair of passes defended.

After spending five seasons with the Hogs, Carter earned the right to go home for a bonus season. It's hard to find a way to be very critical of someone who's dealt with the knee injury he had in 2022 and dealing with a variety of defensive coordinators.

Now he will play a year with the Mustangs, who will be playing in the ACC next year, moving up from the AAC level they've dealt with since the old Southwest Conference shut down in 1996. They bounced around several times and finally are joining a league playing at the highest level.
