FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas wasn't directly affected with the court ruling in Tennessee on Tuesday that kept NCAA restrictions in place on schools paying players directly. How long that lasts remains in doubt. It's becoming clear this SEC-Big Ten Alliance is basically a way to probably kick the NCAA to the curb.

I'm not the only one feeling that way. On Halftime with Phil Elson and Matt Jones on Friday on ESPN Arkansas, Bill King of WNSR in Nashville basically felt the same way. He even talked about Greg Sankey's comment that removed all doubt as to what the intentions are. You can hear the entire interview below.

Sankey said one thing that was obvious from the time it was announced. They think there should be a better selection process of four conference champions and the highest ranked Group of 5 team with seven other schools tacked on. That's why you need to be among the highest-ranked dozen teams.

We've seen that may or may not be the best teams in the country. Let's face it, the second tier of teams in both conference are loads better than the ACC or Big 12 in recent years. People will cite the results of bowl games, but that stopped mattering decades ago. You never know which team cares about being there. These days with so many guys opting out of bowl games for the draft or whatever, teams rarely show up with the roster they played with the in the regular season.

The Razorbacks haven't been in the Top 12 conversation late in the year since 2011. That's when Bobby Petrino's last (and best) team won 11 games and still finished third in the SEC West in the post-bowl game rankings. Before that you have 2010, 2006, 1998 and nothing else since joining the SEC in 1992.

Whether any of this has any effect on the Hogs probably won't be known for a while It will have an impact on recruiting in regard to how far all of this is going with players getting paid. A National Labor Relations Board regional official ruled Monday that Dartmouth  players are employees of the school, clearing the way to create the first-ever labor union for NCAA athletes.

If that happens, a clear path for schools to start paying players directly will emerge. Of course, we're years away from that happening. The lawyers have to finish getting as much as possible out of the whole situation. At least it would level the playing field across the board. About the only thing to determine at that point is how high that field will be placed.
