Drew Dominance: Elite 2023 Guard Ja'Kobe Walter Commits to Baylor

The Bears have added a top-tier guard to the backcourt for a third-straight offseason

Baylor Bears men's basketball and coach Scott Drew have struck gold on the recruiting trail once again.

Link Academy (Branson, MO) 2023 guard Ja'Kobe Walter announced Wednesday that he has committed to Baylor. Walter, a product of McKinney (McKinney, TX) before transferring for his senior year, had cut his final list down to Baylor, Texas, Alabama, and Auburn before choosing a path to Waco.

"I’m excited to announce that I’m officially committed to Baylor University," Walter told Sports Illustrated. "I chose Baylor for a few reasons, but one of the biggest was because of how well they develop their guards. The training and growth that their guards go through and show is very elite; plus, I had the best relationship with Coach (Scott) Drew and Coach (Alvin) Brooks. I took my official visit there on June 15 and that really just sealed it for me."

The 6-5, 180-pound guard now joins point guard Miro Little, a Helsinki Basketball Academy (Finland) product. Little committed to Baylor on April 15 and is the only other current member of the Bears' 2023 recruiting class.

Walter says he's already formed a unique bond with the coaching staff, particularly assistant Alvin Brooks III.

“He’s an overall cool dude," Walter said. "It’s not only just basketball with him. We talk about anything. Actually, it’s mostly everything besides basketball.”

Walter participated in the U18 FIBA Americas Championship National Team training camp, which ran from May 26 to June 2 in Houston.

After adding talented guard Keyonte George last offseason, the Bears now have another elite presence to go alongside returners like Langston Love, LJ Cryer, and the veteran Adam Flagler.
