Despite Tang's Departure, Solid Coaching Staff Remains

Bears promote from within and boast an established group of leaders

Although the Baylor men's basketball program and head coach Scott Drew recently lost the team's top aide in Jerome Tang to Big 12-rival Kansas State, the Bears should be just fine despite his departure.

Tang, 55, was named the head coach for the Wildcats on March 21. He agreed to a six-year deal worth $14.1 million.

Both Alvin Brooks III and John Jakus were promoted to associate head coaches, and they have a plethora of experience to bring to the hardwood -- along with multiple years working under Drew.

Brooks III is now entering his sixth season with the men's basketball program after joining the staff in 2016. He previously was an assistant coach at Kansas State.

Jakus is in his fifth year with Baylor after being hired away from Gonzaga in 2017.

Jared Nuness was also promoted from within the organization and named assistant coach after five years as the team's special assistant and director of player development. He has been with Drew and the Bears for 12 years.

Drew's coaching staff is rounded out by Bill Peterson (special assistant to the Head Coach), Aditya Malhotra (Director of Operations), Ty Beard (Director of Video Operations), Jason Smith (Director of Recruiting Operations) and former player Tweety Carter (Director of Player Development).

Carter joined the staff on March 29 -- just eight days after Tang's hiring -- and brings a 12-year professional playing career to the table after graduating from Baylor in 2010.

The Baylor men's basketball team tips off the 2022-23 campaign in November after going 27-7 last year (14-4 Big 12) before eventually falling to North Carolina in overtime 93-86 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
