Baylor's Craig Williams Ready to Prove He Belongs

Fifth-year junior running back has battled numerous injuries during his collegiate career

Craig Williams is on a mission to prove he belongs in the running back room for the Baylor Bears football team after battling multiple injuries during his collegiate career.

Williams, a 5-9, 168-pound fifth-year junior running back out of Crosby, Texas, carried the ball 17 times for 68 yards in week 2 against BYU. He also racked up 65 receiving yards on three catches.

"It meant a lot to me just to be able to go out there and help my team and do the best that I could to put us in a position to win," Williams said. "I'm never going to turn down any carries. You prepare every day just as if you're the starter so when they call your number you'll be ready to go out there and work, and that's what I was able to do."

Nicknamed "Sqwirl," the junior running back played in just two of Baylor's 14 games in 2021 after leading the team with 188 rushing yards, two touchdowns and 9.4 yards per carry in 2020. He also did not play in 2019 due to an injury.

"My health means everything to me, and being able to stay healthy and stay on the field means a lot to me; to be able to go out there and help my team," Williams said. " I went through rehab all last year. I did a lot of rehab just this offseason so I feel like it's very strong and a lot more comfortable than I was last year. I can make all the cuts that I need to make."

Thus far in 2022, Williams has 81 rushing yards on 20 carries with one rushing touchdown along with 88 receiving yards on four receptions.

He's not overlooking Texas State, Baylor's week 3 opponent on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. Central Time at McLane Stadium.

"I think they're a really good defense," Williams said. "They've got a couple guys returning, a couple guys that can really go. I like to see how we match up."
