Baylor's Monaray Baldwin Ready to 'Execute' Plays in 2022

Sophomore wide receiver Monaray Baldwin aiming to improve on 2021 numbers with a primary focus on blocking

Baylor sophomore Monaray Baldwin, a 5-9, 164-pound wide receiver for coach Dave Aranda and the Bears football team, is eager to hit the gridiron in 2022.

Especially following a 48-yard touchdown run in Baylor's 21-7 Sugar Bowl victory over Mississippi to ring in the new year on Jan. 1.

"I don't really like when people talk about it because it's just one play," Baldwin said. "It's more of a team game, and people always talk about it. But it is what it is. It felt good at that time, but I'm just ready for this next season coming up."

Baldwin appeared in eight games as a freshman in 2021, garnering 87 rushing yards on six carries with one touchdown, seven receiving yards on one reception and 48 kick return yards on two attempts.

"I feel like we have a lot of talent," Baldwin said. "We can all go out there and produce, so I feel like it really doesn't matter who plays; it's just whoever goes out there, we're going to produce."

Baylor's wide receiver depth- and all over the field- is also encouraging to Baldwin.

"We can go four deep at every position if we have everybody," Baldwin said. "Gavin [Holmes] just got a little tweaked up, but he'll be back in no time and we're like four deep at every position."

So what's the biggest aspect of Baldwin's game that he has been working to improve upon the most over the summer?

"For me, it's really just blocking," Baldwin said. "Because everybody knows I'm fast; I can run the ball, I can catch the ball. But blocking is something we're really taking more focus to because it's not really what people focus on. So if we come to focus, they know we're going to run the ball, they know we're going to pass the ball. So if we're the best blocking team in the country, then I think nobody can stop us."

Baldwin completed his senior year at Shoemaker High School in Killeen, Texas with 1,306 all-purpose yards as a wide receiver, kick returner and punt returner, including 795 receiving yards on 42 receptions with 12 touchdowns.

"Whatever play they call, I'm going to go execute it to the best of my ability whether it's a run play or pass play, and hopefully we can all be on the same page on offense," Baldwin said. "We don't have anything to prove. We know what we can do. So as long as we execute, we'll be fine."
