Baylor RB Coach Justin Johnson Hired By Texas Tech

The Bears have lost one of their top assistants to a conference rival

Baylor Bears running backs coach Justin Johnson has long been considered one of the top assistants on Dave Aranda's coaching staff since his hiring in 2020.

Now, however, he is on the move. And to a Big 12 rival no less.

On Wednesday, the Texas Tech Red Raiders and head coach Joey McGuire announced Johnson as the team's new wide receivers coach.

"We're excited to welcome Coach Johnson and his family to Texas Tech," McGuire said. "I've seen firsthand his ability to connect and inspire student-athletes to perform at their best, so he'll be a tremendous addition to our staff. Our players will really enjoy the energy that he will bring each and every day to help push this program forward as we strive for a Big 12 Championship."

Johnson spent three seasons in Waco, helping the Bears develop one of the top rushing attacks in the nation over that time.

In 2021, in fact, the Bears ranked 10th in the nation in rushing, averaging 219.3 yards, thanks in large part to star running back Abram Smith, who is now in the NFL.

This season, the Bears were once again outstanding on the ground, averaging 182.38 yards per game behind a largely inexperienced group - led by Johnson's direction.
