Steve Addazio Criticizes Current Transfer System In NCAA

One of the most divisive topics in college sports right now is the way the current transfer market has evolved and changed over the past few years. There have been basically two types of transfers that have really brought up strong debate. There are the elite recruits who are recruited to a school, and don't get the playing time or coaches they wanted, and are allowed to transfer without having to sit a year. Most recently two examples of this would be Tate Martell in Miami and Justin Fields with Ohio State who both were given immediate eligibility for reasons that are not clear.
The second issue that has popped up are people who need to transfer for family or other important reasons. Last week Virginia Tech center Brock Hoffman was denied immediate eligibility even though he was transferring to be closer to his sick mother, which rightfully led to a huge uproar with the college sports community.. While he was denied there were scores of other players who were given immediate eligibility. The people critiquing the system say that there are no clear guidelines for who gets to play immediately and who doesn't.
Kind of out of the blue at today's press conference, Steve Addazio was asked about his view on the transfer system, and he didn't hold back:
I thought Addazio had some good points in there, mainly that if kids were allowed to recruit each other it would basically destroy a program like Boston College. BC is a program, one that exists on developing talent and bringing in graduate transfers (which he acknowledges), and it would be chaos if they started to develop that talent only to have a major program just come in and steal them because they have a need.
He mentions special exemptions, I think that is where the NCAA needs to be more lenient and transparent. Players like Hoffman should be able to transfer to be closer to his parents, that shouldn't be a question, but a player like Justin Fields who didn't want to sit behind Jake Fromm should sit. Quarterbacks should not be given exemptions just because they can bring in eyeballs and that is what it seems like right now.
