Boston College 58 Syracuse 27: Stock Report

Boston College dominated Syracuse this year in their annual rivalry, moving the ball at will for a huge 58-27 win at the Carrier Dome. The Eagles racked up 691 yards through the air and ground on way to a massive drubbing of the Orange. Let's take a look at the positions and players and see which players had stocks go up and which fell in yesterday's win.
Stock Up
Dennis Grosel: Did he have to chuck the ball all over the field? No. Did he do what he needed to do to help BC win? Absolutely. Grosel was everything that Boston College needed out of their quarterback yesterday. When Syracuse started stacking the box to try and stop AJ Dillon and David Bailey, Grosel aired it out with two huge 50+ yard passes to Kobay White and Zay Flowers. And when BC started to feel a Syracuse comeback coming it was Grosel that hit three third down passes to keep the sticks moving. Excellent game for the sophomore, and hopefully one he can build off of.
The Entire Offensive Line: I could create a "stock up" for each individual player but let's just give it to the whole group who collectively whooped Syracuse up front. The mistakes were at a minimum, they were blasting Syracuse off the line. If Boston College had left the starters in they could have scored 80 points on that defense. This is the best offensive line Steve Addazio has ever put together and that is saying a lot. John Phillips, a Syracuse native who was overlooked by the Orange in recruiting, got to go in front of his hometown crowd and lead an offense that dominated up front. And then to top it off he led his team in "For Boston" in the Syracuse locker room, such a cool moment.
Love that Syracuse native John Phillips, who was basically ignored by SU during the recruitment process is leading For Boston at the Carrier Dome after a BC win. https://t.co/aE8d9njLSB

The Buffalo Boys: AJ Dillon and David Bailey did whatever they wanted to this Syracuse defense and they did it with flair. The pair had 414 yards of offense and five touchdowns, and both ripped off huge runs Dillon with a 54 yarder and Bailey with a 74 yarder. By the time they both found the bench the two had worn down Syracuse so badly they were cutting through the line with ease every time they touched the ball. BC has always seemingly had good running backs, but right now they two of their very best.
Nolan Borgersen: When Mike Palmer went down with an injury it was the converted wide receiver who came in and took over at safety. His play was impressive, he was great at shutting down the quick outs and screens that had killed BC in the past. Loved his play, hope he sees more playing time moving forward.
Brandon Barlow: We knew going into this game that Syracuse's offensive line was a mess, and yesterday's game was no exception. Barlow took advantage of the porous line with two sacks.
Third Down Defense: Syracuse went 5/17 on the game. Very solid job by BC to shut that down.
Stock Down
Turnovers: Against most teams turning the ball over on consecutive plays would have been a death knell. Boston College, normally a very good team with ball security had fumbles on two consecutive plays by Hunter Long and David Bailey and yet they somehow still survived. They can't continue that though moving forward, ball security needs to improve.
Tight End Injuries: I touched on this earlier today but BC's tight end group is now precariously thin after injuries to Hunter Long, Korab Idrizi, Danny Dalton and Chris Garrison. BC's run game usually runs the 12 set, and without a stable group of tight ends that might need to change. Not sure what Long's status is, but BC will need someone else to step up if he is out for an extended amount of time.
Jason Maitre: He's young, and still a little green and it showed at times yesterday. He made some plays, but Trishton Jackson had his number for most of the game.
"Side to Side Defense". I still see this as a major problem with Boston College's defense. When Syracuse decided to run stretch runs or throw little screens to the side they were able to get chunks of yards. They were able to fix this when a)Nolan Borgersen came in at safety and b) Syracuse all but abandoned it when they decided to just have Tommy Devito just chuck the ball 50 yards down field on almost every pass. This still could be an area BC could get exposed on moving forward.
