BC Offense Will Be Unique Challenge For Virginia Tech

Can BC's offense be the difference in this game?

After today's practice, Steve Addazio spoke to the media for the final time before Boston College faces off with Virginia Tech. He talked about the defense being young, and inexperienced, which they are, but that the offense and special teams will hopefully give the Eagles the edge against VT.

One of the more interesting aspects that Addazio talked about was that BC's physical punch them in the mouth style is a unique challenge that most teams struggle to prepare for:

BC does run an offense that is very different than many current spread style NCAA offenses, whether that is a good or bad thing. When Addazio mentions the "11" formation, he means that an offense will line up with one tight end, and one back, the rest of the eligible targets being wide outs. This is what most programs run in a majority of their packages. What BC does is run a 12 or even a 22 offense, which incorporates multiple backs and multiple tight ends. It may look the same watching on TV, but BC does run multiple sets and formations, and if BC's offense is clicking, which hopefully it will be this year, it could make life that much harder for opposing defenses to plan for and defend on the field.

In theory if an offense is effective that should make planning and prepping it that more difficult. Opposing scout squads have to mimic this, and given that it's not a natural formation, it might be tricky. Again, this is all in theory and doesn't take into play calling and situational game play, but it's an interesting nuance to how Addazio runs his offense, and why on paper if the strategy is run effectively it could work against the Hokies this week.
