New Cal Kicker Ryan Coe Says He Made a 67-Yard Field Goal in Practice

Ryan Coe made two 56-yard field goals in Friday’s practice at Cal, which is his fourth college in four years

Kicker Ryan Coe made quite an impression in Friday’s practice at Cal, which happens to be the fourth college Coe has attended while plying his trade.

Cal was running two-minute drills at the end of Friday’s practice, with Coe attempting field goals with less than five seconds left in three simulated possessions.

At the end of the first possession, Coe booted a 44-yard field goal that might have been good from 60.  On the second one, Coe kicked a 56-yard field goal with room to spare.  On the final one, which was the last play of the practice, Coe made another 56-yard field goal that was never in doubt.

Three attempts, three makes, from 44, 56 and 56 yards. Coe said there was a slight wind at his back, but no one else seemed to notice a breeze.

This is not the limit of Coe’s range. He said he feels comfortable from 63 or 64 yards out, and said he once made a 67-yard field goal in a simulated game situation during a practice at Cincinnati.  Cincinnati was the second stop of his four-college journey through college football.  It is also where he received his undergraduate degree in 2022.  Coe turned 23 years old recently, and the 2024 season, which will be Cal’s first in the ACC, will be Coe’s sixth and final college season.

Coe has manipulated his college career and the transfer portal to see the county.  A native of western Pennsylvania, Coe started his college journey on the East Coast (University of Delaware), then moved to the Midwest (Cincinnati), then spent time in the south (North Carolina) and is now on the West Coast at Cal.

There seems to be a reason for each move.

“I started out at the University of Delaware for three years,” he said, noting that this FCS school in Newark, Delaware, was the only one that offered him a full scholarship. “I knew I had a good season, coupled with my head coach got fired at Delaware. I knew I had a good enough season to move out, and that’s how I ended up at Cincinnati, with coach [Luke] Fickell and had a god season there, and he ended up leaving too to go to Wisconsin. At that point I already got my degree, my undergrad. And when he left I kind of had a good season again, and felt there was a lot of people leaving and it wouldn’t have been a good situation in the next year, so I used by grad transfer to go to North Carolina. I ended up getting hurt in the second game of the season, was out, and they kind of just went in a different direction, and that’s kind of how I ended up out here.”

Here's his statistical chart:

--- 2019, Delaware: Coe only did kickoffs, no place-kicking

--- 2020, Delaware (2021 Spring schedule): Coe was 12-for-17 on field-goal attempts, with a long of 53 yards.

--- 2021, Delaware: Coe was 14-for-17 on field-goal attempts, with two made field goals of 50 yards or more, including a long of 53 yards.

--- 2022, Cincinnati: Coe was 19-for-23 and made his only attempt beyond 50 yards, which was a 52-yarder.

--- 2023, North Carolina: Coe was 3-for-4 with a long of 47 yards. He was the Tar Heels kicker for only the first two games before getting injured.

So here he is in California at an FBS school, a long way from where he started, in Delaware at an FCS school.

“It’s definitely made me realize that college football is a business,” Coe said. “I’m just fortunate to have been at all these places, be with all these coaching staffs and meet all these people, so it’s been awesome.”
