Cal OLB Myles Jernigan Will Enter Transfer Portal

Myles Jernigan made 16 starts for Cal over the past two season, but will be leaving for his final year of college eligibility

Myles Jernigan, an outside linebacker who started 16 games over the past two seasons for Cal, announced on social media on Wednesday that he will enter the transfer portal and a graduate transfer.

Jernigan started five games this past season and played in 11 games. He finished with 20 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. His best game was against Oregon, when he recorded three solo tackles, including one for a loss.

Jernigan had a big season in 2022 as a sophomore. That year, he started 11 games and played in all 12. He recorded  51 tackles, including five tackles for loss and four sacks.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Jernigan played in six games, all off the bench, as a redshirt freshman in 2021.

He is from Grand Prairie, Texas, and attended South Grand Prairie High School

Cal is the midst of its spring workouts, and the Bears have seven more spring sessions scheduled, including Wednesday. This is not a time in which players typically enter the portal. They usually do it right after the season or after spring football, when they get an idea of what their status will be for the coming season.

David Reese and Xavier Carlton are likely to be the starting outside linebackers for Cal next fall when the Bears join the Atlantic Coast Conference. However, the Bears typically rotate a lot of players in at the outside linebacker position.

Undergraduates can only transfer during certain windows. However, graduate transfers can transfer at any time.

In his announcement Jernigan said, in part:

"Thank you to Cal for making my first dream come true of playing Division 1 college football as well as providing me with lifetime experiences that I will cherish forever while attaining a prestigious degree, and with that being said I will be entering the portal as a graduate transfer for by final year of eligibility."
