Cal Football Video: Beau Baldwin 'Excited' to Work With Freshman QB Spencer Brasch

Brasch could make his starting debut Saturday night on the road against 12th-ranked Utah

If freshman Spencer Brasch winds up as Cal's starting quarterback on Saturday night against 12th-ranked Utah, he will bring inexperience but also raw talent to Rice-Eccles Stadium.

So says Beau Baldwin, Cal's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Baldwin, talking in the video above, said it's exciting to coach Brasch, the 18-year-old from Gilbert, Arizona.

"He gets rid of the ball really quick. He's got very good arm action. He can see things and get it out fast. That's huge," Baldwin said.

"But at the same time, we've got to clean up a lot things, just in terms of where his eyes need to be, the timing of certain things, being smart about when to check it down and when to push it.

"He's showing some great things and it's exciting to coach him."

Cal has not announced its starting quarterback for this week, and likely won't do so until just before the 8 p.m. MT kickoff.

Devon Modster was injured in the fourth quarter last week against Oregon State and was listed on the Cal injury chart as "week to week." He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt after practice on Tuesday and is not expected to be ready for Utah.

Chase Garbers, who started the season as the Bears' QB, remains on the shelf with an injury he sustained several weeks ago against Arizona State. He has been listed as out indefinitely, although the Bears do believe he will return this season.

This week it seems most likely Brasch will get the call. He was a consensus three-star prospect out of Higley High School, where he passed for 5,522 yards with 78 touchdowns as a junior and senior.

He was 2-for-6 for 24 yards with an interception and two sacks in his fourth-quarter debut against Oregon State.
