UC Davis inside linebacker Teddye Buchanan announced on social media Tuesday evening that he is entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, and a few minutes later he announced on twitter that he has received offers from Cal and Stanford.

Buchanan was named to the second-team all-Big Sky team this past season as a junior, and was a third-team all-conference selection in 2022 as a sophomore. He has eight interceptions in his three seasons at Davis, and was a team captain each of the past two seasons.

When Cal played UC Davis in the Bears' 2022 season opener, Buchanan had a team-high eight tackles and also intercepted a Jack Plummer pass in the first quarter of Cal's 34-13 victory over the Aggies.

Buchanan is hoping to make the jump from the FCS level to the FBS level, but a number of players have done so successfully in the recent past.

He is a Bay Area product from South San Francisco, and he attended St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco.

Buchanan was named the Big Sky defensive player of the week for his performance in the Aggies’ second-ending upset of Sacramento State. He recorded seven tackles and had two interceptions against the No. 8-ranked Hornets.

Buchanan led the Aggies in tackles for the season with 71, one more than former Cal player Evan Tattersall, who is now at UC Davis. Buchanan also had 5.0 tackles for loss and three interceptions. He also had three interceptions in 2022, and two picks in 2021 as a freshman when he was UC Davis’ leading tackler.

The inside linebacker positions are key to Cal's defensive success. All-conference inside linebacker Jackson Sirmon was lost for the season because of a midseason injury in his final year of college football.  However, redshirt sophomore Kaleb Elarms-Orr and freshman Cade Uluave performed well as the two starting linebackers over the second half of the season.

Defense remains a priority for Cal, whose defense in 2023 has been less effective than it was in previous seasons under Justin Wilcox.
