NFL MVP Odds: Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff Among Top 15 Favorites

Both former Cal QBs have much longer betting odds than Patrick Mahomes to take the top prize in 2023

NFL MVP Odds: Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff Among Top 15 Favorites

The 2023 NFL MVP race has already started – on betting sites, that is.

The reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes is the favorite or tied for the favorite role in all six of the betting sites we cited regarding early MVP odds. Joe Burrow and Josh Allen are right behind, as you might expect.

But not too far down the line is Aaron Rodgers, the 39-year-old former Cal quarterback who is now with the New York Jets. His odds suggest he is the seventh-highest favorite, although some sites put him higher or lower than that.

It would seem like being the seventh favorite (at odds as high as 18-to-1) would make Rodgers a genuine long shot. But prior to the 2020 season, Rodgers was tied for being the eight-highest MVP favorite at 25-to-1 odds, according to William Hill Sports Book. And Rodgers ended up winning the MVP award that year in a landslide.

The question for Rodgers is whether, at age 39, he can rebound from a poor 2022 season with a new team to win a fifth MVP, tying Peyton Manning for the most MVPs.

Another former Cal player who has jumped into the MVP competition is Jared Goff. His average odds among the six sites place him as the 13th-highest favorite to win the MVP. That’s because he was outstanding over his final nine starts of 2022, throwing 15 touchdown passes with no interceptions while the Lions went 7-2 in those games.

Goff was not even listed among the top 40 or 50 MVP favorites prior to last season. After the 2021 season, when he had mediocre statistics and the Lions went 3-10-1 his starts, Goff was seen as a place-holder for the Lions’ quarterback job until an adequate replacement could be found.

He’s the man in Detroit now, and we’ll see if he can rise in the MVP competition through the 2023 season. He starts with shorter odds than Derek Carr, Russell Wilson and Matthew Stafford (the player for whom he was traded), to name just a few.

Here are the early MVP odds from six betting sites for the top 17 favorites (with the fractional odds in parentheses in some cases). You will note the odds are pretty consistent for those at the top, but vary considerably as you go down the list.
