Washington State coach Mike Leach held his weekly press conference on Monday, as seen in the video here, and he complimented Cal’s defense and Bears linebacker Evan Weaver. Oh, and Leach also talked about zombies.

Cal, which hosts Washington State (4-4, 1-4 Pac-12) in a 4 p.m. game on Saturday, has done a pretty good job defensively against the Cougars’ high-scoring passing attack since Justin Wilcox became head coach. Cal beat Washington State 37-3 in 2017 and lost 19-13 last year when the Cougars scored the go-ahead touchdown in the final minute. Both times, WSU was a top-10 team.

When asked why Cal has been able to hold the Cougars’ offense down, Leach replied in the video, “For the same reason they’ve been able to hold everybody in check the past two seasons, because they have a good defense, that’s what good defenses do.

“He [Justin Wilox] has been a career defensive coordinator and always run a good defense. As a matter of fact, there’s a ton of people that borrow and draw from his defense.”

The focus turned to Cal linebacker Evan Waver, and when asked what he thought about Weaver leading the nation in tackles, Leach replied, “ Good for Evan.”

He later expanded on his thoughts regarding Weaver.

“He’s big, he moves well, he’s always been a pretty gifted guy,” Leach said. “He’s got long limbs and he runs well for a guy his size. He’s bigger than most linebackers, but also runs well.”

Leach did not seem too concerned about the fact that he did not know which quarterback would start for Cal, noting that they all are fairly similar.

And he ended his press conference with what he did on Halloween and his thoughts on zombies.

“Zombies are the most boring of the monsters,” he said before expanding on the subject.
