Injury Updates for Clemson's Running Back Room

Clemson could be without star running back Will Shipley when they face Notre Dame on Saturday.

The way this season has been going for the Clemson Tigers, beating the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame will be a tall task even if fully healthy. Unfortunately, as of right now, that's not the case and one position group in particular could be lacking some real depth.

Head coach Dabo Swinney gave an update Wednesday afternoon on star running back Will Shipley and freshman Jay Haynes.

Will Shipley

Will Shipley entered the concussion protocol following a hit during the N.C. State game.

Shipley has been in concussion protocol since leaving the game against NC State with a tough hit near the goal line. Swinney had this to say when asked if Shipley had made progress and if his status was still up in the air "Yes and yes. He has made some good progress so we're very encouraged by that. Definitely still day-to-day from a status standpoint."

What will he need to do to get back on the field? "The medical people gotta say he's good to go. I mean that's really it. I don't get involved in that stuff. That's really on them."

As far as the freshman who may be needed this week despite only having 6 carries on the season so far there's more positive news, "Yeah he's been able to practice this week so that's been good getting him back. He hadn't been able to go the last couple of weeks but he has been able to practice so that's good."

With Shipley's status up in the air it's clear the team will rely heavily on Phil Mafah to carry the load out of the backfield but Dabo also was sure to mention the other guys that will be in line for some potential opportunities, "Yeah Domonique, Keith Adams and Jay Haynes. That's our room right there. That's our guys...Depends on what the call is and what package is as far as who would go in there."
