Duke Becomes First Power Five to Offer RB Trent Davis

Duke coach David Cutcliffe prides himself on finding “diamonds in the rough.” In rebuilding the Blue Devils’ program, Coach Cut has ignored recruiting ratings to find “three stars that play like five stars,” even if the majority of recruiting services and other teams passed over the player.

Cutcliffe may be at it again to help Duke find its running back of the future. Looking for a ballcarrier in the class of 2021, Duke extended an offer this week to three-star Trent Davis of Attalla, Alabama’s Etowah High, becoming the first Power Five team to offer Davis.

“I’m glad they pulled the trigger early,” Davis told local paper the Gadsden Times. “It shows that they believe in me and they like me for who I am. It definitely excites me and I’m glad they did it.”

The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder is not rated, yet, by many of the recruiting services. Prior to Duke, his offer list included Arkansas State, Army, FAU and Georgia State.

Some other Power Five schools, including Georgia, have shown interest but said they wanted to see a few more games before deciding on an offer. There seems to be some concern about his size.

Davis has cried wolf in the past, so his mother didn’t believe him when he first told her about Duke’s interest.

“I joke around with her sometimes,” Davis told the local paper. “Sometimes I’ll tell her I have a big offer then I tell her I’m just playing. But (this time) I was being serious and she thought I was playing. She was excited.”

Davis rushed for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns last year, adding another 400 yards and five scores receiving.
