Around this time last year, Mike Elko and his Duke football staff managed to reel in a bunch of recruits despite his 0-0 record as a head coach, at one point boasting a top-25 class on the 2023 trail (the Blue Devils finished No. 55 on 247Sports' team recruiting ranking).

Fast forward to this weekend and the dozen recruits in Durham for official visits. With a 9-4 record, a Military Bowl victory, and an ACC Coach of the Year honor under Elko's belt, the Duke football program should be a much easier sell to promising prospects.

And judging by Elko's multiple tweets beginning Sunday morning, his recruiting team has enjoyed success, presumably receiving at least five verbal commitments.

He started with the following tweet at 9:19 a.m.:

Then Elko averaged about one more such tweet every hour until his fifth of the day popped up at 1:31 p.m.:

It's worth noting that, per 247Sports, at least a couple of four-stars, Cardinal Newman (Fla.) cornerback Josh Philostin and Avon Old Farms (Conn.) defensive lineman Benedict Umeh, are among the group on campus this weekend.

There's no word on which of the visitors gave Elko and his gang the news they wanted to hear, as none had revealed their pledges on social media when this article was published.

Entering this weekend, the list of Duke football's 2024 verbal pledges already included what the 26-deep 2023 haul lacked: a four-star talent in Center Grove (Ind.) quarterback Tyler Cherry, who announced his commitment a few weeks ago.

The Blue Devils' other four reported 2024 commits are all three-star preps.

Although the collection ranks only No. 54 nationally, it's No. 2 among programs with no more than five commits. Again, though, remember that the commitment count should be at 10 or more now, according to Elko's string of tweets.
