Duke Loses Center Jack Wohlabaugh For Season

Offensive lineman undergoes ankle surgery

Duke has lost three straight games and has an offense that has been struggling of late.

The last thing the Blue Devils needed was an injury to a key lineman, but that’s what’s happened.

David Cutcliffe announced that center Jack Wohlabaugh will miss the rest of the year after undergoing surgery on his ankle.

“We do not have a conference policy on injuries,” Cutcliffe said. “I know that you all ask me all the time about injuries. I don’t like that we don’t have a policy. I don’t understand. In fairness to everyone, whether it be team-to-team or to the media. I was for what we did before (a weekly injury report, which was discontinued last year). I don’t think it should be coaches vote. I think this is bigger than the coaches.”

In other words, even though Cutcliffe wasn’t required to release information about Wohlabaugh, he was going to anyway.

“I’m going to tell you, because I think it’s fair and right. Jack Wohlabaugh had surgery this morning and will be out.”

Wohlabaugh transferred from Ohio State after two seasons in Columbus. He started nine games at center last season and had started every game this year. Wohlabaugh won an ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week award in each of the last two seasons and was on the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, given to the top center in college football.

“This young man has been a warrior,” Cutcliffe said. “He has fought to stay in and stay in. We’ve had a number of people playing hurt, but it was time, and it was the right thing to do.”
