Gators Kicker Trey Smack Tabbed SEC Special Teams Player of the Week

Newly minted Florida placekicker Trey Smack earned the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week award for his Week 4 play.

Gators kicker Trey Smack earned SEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors following his historic performance in Florida's 22-7 win over the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday.

Smack connected on all five field goal attempts, adding one extra point and seven kickoffs, en route to posting 16 of the Gators' 22 points.

His perfect night in The Swamp did more than elevate the Gators over Biff Poggi's 49ers squad, though. It seemingly reconciles a phase of Florida's struggling special teams unit moving forward.

Entering into a competition with former starting placekicker Adam Mihalek after taking over in Florida's win over Tennessee, Smack won the job with the hope he could provide consistency and long-range power.

The Severna Park, Maryland, native — who's worked as Florida's primary kickoff specialist for most of his time in Gainesville — shined in his first career start amid the abundant opportunity, knocking through field goals of 23 (twice), 27, 36 and 54 yards, respectively.

The outing solidified his starting position, heading into the heat of UF's SEC competition slate.

Smack becomes Florida's first Special Teams Player of the Week since return man Kadarius Toney earned the award in 2020. The Gators have now totaled three SEC Player of the Week honors during the 2023 season after Jordan Castell and Cam Jackson took home awards in Week 3.
