GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Former Florida linebacker and strength and conditioning intern Lacedrick Brunson was charged with attempted first-degree homicide and two third-degree counts of child abuse following his Wednesday, June 28 arrest in Alachua County, according to court documents obtained by All Gators.

Brunson, 24, is accused of stabbing a woman and throwing her two children to the ground at the Biven’s Cove apartment complex in Gainesville on Wednesday afternoon.

The allegations were first reported by WCJB-20

Per the reporting, a bystander heard screaming from outside an apartment unit on Wednesday. They entered to discover Brunson with a knife, and the victim with stab wounds in the chest and chin areas and a cut on the back of her head.

The witness obtained the alleged weapon from Brunson, and both were outside the apartment — with Brunson covered in blood, attempting to regain entry — when Gainesville police arrived on the scene.

Brunson was arrested and the victim was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Her condition has since been considered stable.

According to the report, the woman described Brunson as having acted abnormally in the days leading up to the alleged attack. He purportedly asked her and the children for a group hug and squeezed the victims to the point where breathing became constricted in the moments before violence broke out, proclaiming “I am God, they aren’t going to die."

Brunson, a product of Miami (Fla.) Jackson High School, signed with Florida in the recruiting class of 2017 and spent five seasons with the team, through 2021. He appeared in 40 games with the Gators.

Brunson returned to the program in March 2023 in a strength and conditioning internship role and was witnessed observing the Gators' spring practices, according to Graham Hall of Swamp247.

UF's athletic association confirmed on Monday that Brunson is no longer with the program, but did not offer additional comment.
