Florida offered a familiar face on Monday evening, beginning its pursuit of Louisiana defensive back and transfer portal prospect Trenayvian Amos.

Amos announced his portal entry at 7:37 P.M. ET on Monday. By 8:09 P.M., Billy Napier — the Gators' head coach who once recruited Amos to join the Ragin' Cajuns — and his staff had come calling.

By press time, so had Alabama, Miami, Michigan State, LSU, Ole Miss, Illinois, Auburn and Oregon.

A class of 2020 product of New Iberia (La.) Catholic, Amos signed with Louisiana over a last-second offer from Tennessee and pursuits by smaller colleges. He teamed up with Napier and the former UL coaching staff for the 2020-21 seasons before Napier made the jump to Florida.

Listed as a 6-foot-1, 197-pound cornerback, Amos appeared in 34 games over three seasons with the Ragin' Cajuns. He accumulated 59 total tackles with 2.5 for loss, one interception and 14 defended passes in that stretch, primarily as an outside corner with occasional snaps in the nickel and at safety.

Although Florida's cornerback depth chart projection appears in solid shape with junior Jason Marshall Jr., redshirt junior Jalen Kimber, sophomore Devin Moore and freshman Ja'Keem Jackson vying for playing time in 2023, Napier has suggested other positions in the secondary as spots of need this offseason: safety and STAR nickel cornerback.

“That’s one of the areas on our team where young players are going to have to play, there’s no question," Napier said of the positions on Apr. 6. "Overall, that’s a room where we can add a player."

The room currently consists of sophomores Kamari Wilson and Miguel Mitchell, freshmen Jordan Castell and Bryce Thornton and redshirt junior wide receiver convert Ja'Markis Weston at safety, and redshirt junior Jaydon Hill, senior Jadarrius Perkins and freshman Sharif Denson at STAR.

"It’s a room that we need to continue to develop depth if that makes sense and, ultimately, it’s going to be a big part of how good we can be on defense is how good that can be," Napier admitted. "That’ll be one of the areas of our team where we will be inexperienced and we will be playing young players.”

Perhaps Amos could offer the experience Napier covets on the backend of Florida's defense, despite his tenure as an outside corner.

Florida exited the spring transfer portal window — which closed Apr. 30 but requires as many as two days to process entries — with five scholarship openings on its 85-man roster ahead of the 2023 season.
