Sophomore linebacker Shemar James has been a pillar of Florida's rekindled and third-ranked defensive unit through two weeks this season.

On Thursday, the Gators' second-level defender was recognized for his elite performance to begin the 2023 campaign, earning Pro Football Focus' highest grade of all SEC linebackers with an 85.5.

Accounting for 19 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss, James has filled in nicely as a starter to soften the blow of losing the veteran duo of Ventrell Miller and Amari Burney from the middle of the defense this offseason.

He's led the Gators in tackles in each of their first two outings, plugging rushing holes at an uber-effective rate while serving as a true three-down piece with the athleticism to perform well as a coverage backer when matched up against tight ends and when in zone.

James posted a career-high in tackles during the Gators' week one loss to Utah, accounting for 13 to live up to the expectations he built for himself after a strong freshman showing in 2022.

The skillset he boasts has elevated those around him in the position room, serving as the undefined on-field leader despite being one of the youngest talents to occupy a spot in the corps. Derek Wingo, Teradja Mitchell and Mannie Nunnery have each served as beneficiaries of James' play this season.

His notable chemistry with fellow Alabama native Scooby Williams — emerging as the starter alongside James — has presented newfound speed in pursuit from the second level, which can be attributed to the overall success experienced by the Austin Armstrong-led attack against Utah and McNeese State.

"I actually recruited Shemar," Williams said of James on Wednesday. "I've been knowing Shemar since before he got to college. We've always had that connection. Being here has only brought us closer. He's a great person, a great football player, and a great individual to be around."

James will look to continue the promising start to his second season in Gainesville on Saturday when the Gators host the Tennessee Volunteers at 7 p.m.
