Worst to first: State of Florida's "Big 3"

In the state of Florida, the "Big 3" in college football is known as Florida, Florida State and Miami. Each have now played a game this season, how do they look?

The bad, the worse and the ugly.

Florida and Miami played each other 10 days ago. Florida State played Boise State in Tallahassee three days ago. The only unbeaten now is UF, but all three left plenty to be desired. Let's look at how each of them did and rank them from worst to first.

Worst: Florida State

It really is not particularly close. The Seminoles started the game really strong against the Broncos and got worse every quarter. The first quarter ended with a 21-6 'Nole lead. The second quarter was a back and forth affair but FSU still went into halftime with a 12-point advantage.

The second half seemed to define everything about this program under coach Willie Taggart to this point. The Seminoles failed to score a single point in the second half and could not do anything to stop the Broncos' offense. FSU gave up 28 plays of 10 or more yards and 17 points to ultimately lose the game to an unranked Boise St.

This was an abysmal start to a pivotal year for Taggart. FSU can't afford to fire him currently, but with every embarrassing loss like this the seat gets warmer.

Next: Miami

This is perhaps the biggest wildcard out of the three. The 'Canes lost an ugly game to Florida in Orlando but there were major positives to take away if you're a Miami fan. More than anything, first-year starter Jarren Williams looked really good, despite getting sacked 10 times. He stood in the pocket and made good reads and made accurate downfield throws, something Miami had no hope of getting out of N'Kosi Perry or Tate Martell.

Also, Miami's weapons proved to be legit in that game. Tight end Brevin Jordan looked like a wide receiver running routes and catching screens and running back Deejay Dallas had probably the best sub-100-yard game I have ever seen at 94 yards, averaging 8.5 yards a carry.

The 'Canes are still absolutely in the mix to win Coastal division in the ACC. Currently their biggest threat looks like it could be the North Carolina Tar Heels, who just had an enormous program win over South Carolina in the opener in Charlotte.

UM and UNC play next week. This to me is possibly a season-defining game. The Tar Heels have not had this much football confidence in years and they know that Miami is typically the Coastal-division standard. The 'Canes will go to Chapel Hill as a six-point favorite according to Vegas, but that should be among college football's most interesting games to watch in week 2 and should tell us a ton about the 2019 Hurricanes.

Best: Florida

This does, and should feel obvious.

The Gators have easily the best quarterback out of the big 3. Coach Dan Mullen until proven otherwise is far and away and the best coach in the big 3. Coaches like defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, offensive line coach John Hevesy and strength coach Nick Savage have proven that UF has the best staff of the big 3. Need I say more?

Yes, Florida looked ugly against Miami. Four turnovers essentially guarantee losses to LSU or Georgia. But did it beat Miami? Yes. Would it beat Florida State? Probably.

More importantly, UF's mistakes in week 0 seemed to all be extremely fixable ones. The fumbled read option between quarterback Feleipe Franks and Lamical Perine, the dropped speed option by Malik Davis who has not played football in almost a year, and the decision to throw that final interception by Franks instead of just take the sack are all mistakes that practice and film can fix when you believe in your coaching staff.

Miami should improve upon their mistakes as well. It is hard to believe the 'Canes will have another game with 14 penalties for 125 yards. Florida State's problems seem more fundamental to the program. Guys withered to the heat quicker than the team not from Florida in Boise St. The defensive line got no penetration seemingly at all.

Even most Florida State and Miami fans probably agree with this ranking. The season is young, but the first games told us a lot.

FSU plays a must-win game against Louisiana Monroe on Saturday. No game for the 'Noles can be considered a cupcake anymore. Miami plays a game that will tell us a ton about that side of the ACC. Florida should roll against UT Martin, we won't learn much more about UF until the next week when the Gators travel to Lexington to face Kentucky.
