Gators Priority LB Target Kristopher Jones: 'I Love Florida'

The Gators are in good standing to add their third and final linebacker prospect of 2024. Jay Bateman's pull in the DMV could pay dividends in that process.

In this story:

Jay Bateman is arguably the hottest Gators' assistant on the recruiting trail through the early stages of the 2024 cycle.

Reeling in commitments from top 100 prospects Myles Graham and Adarius Hayes, Bateman has quickly replenished the future of the Gators' linebacker corps and hasn't shown signs of stopping there. Anticipated to add one more piece before wrapping up his recruiting efforts at his spot this cycle, Bateman has worked diligently to lure in a third LB.

Stafford (Va.) Mountain View prospect Kristopher Jones aligns as the top target to fill the remaining void, showing mutual interest in Florida to this point.

"I love the area," he told All Gators in a recent interview. "They are one of my top schools. I love Florida."

However, while his fondness for the program and atmosphere surrounding The Swamp is evident, a growing relationship between Jones and his potential position coach may be the key to Florida's standing in his recruitment.

To acquire Jones' services, Bateman attempts to dip into a well he's grown familiar with at previous stops.

Dating back to his time at Army, Bateman built a strong rapport with those in the DMV. Understanding the talent that occupies the area, the veteran linebackers coach has made it a point to lure high-level talent in the region to Florida this cycle. The reputation he built there aids that endeavor, as prospective athletes regard the Gators linebackers coach in high light.

Jones falls into that category.

"It's just amazing," he said when asked about Bateman's knowledge of the area. "You know, because we got ballers up here in Virginia as well, and he knows that. That's why I'm one of his guys [that] he's trying to get to come down there. It's just great to have somebody in the area that is down there, you know, that knows we have ballers."

On the field, Jones is viewed similarly to Shemar James — the Gators All-SEC Freshman from 2022.

Although the Gators would likely ask him to align as a middle linebacker compared to James' occupation as the weakside piece in the second level, they believe Jones can maneuver around the formation to present pass-rushing help at times, depending on the situation.

Serving in the middle on early downs to then move closer to the line of scrimmage to get after the passer on third and fourth, Jones is intrigued by the versatile role he would assume if he donned orange and blue threads to continue his football career.

"It's really interesting," he said. "I like the way they move them around in practice and just watch them get at it."

He saw some of that in action during the practice session observed during his most recent trip to Gainesville on March 31, deeming his fourth visit since July 2022 the most in-depth as he got to spend more time with the coaches, expand his knowledge of the nutrition and education opportunities available to athletes and grow more versed on the program as a whole.

"It was just every little detail about what happens with the players."

Currently, UF stands beside Georgia and Ohio State as the schools standing out to the talented linebacker. Down the stretch of his recruitment, the Gators hope the connection between Jones and Bateman can pay dividends for him to join the fold in an already elite second-level haul in 2024.

He expects to announce his commitment prior to his senior season, setting August as a soft target month as he looks to not rush into a decision.

Florida will receive an official visit from Jones on June 2.
