The college basketball transfer portal has seen close to 1,000 players enter since it officially opened March 12, and Florida State has been looking to upgrade its roster after a disappointing 9-23 season. Recently, Florida State has reached out to High Point University transfer Zack Austin, an athletic 6’7” guard from Winston-Salem, NC (I think he’s actually closer to 6’5”/6’6”, but is listed at 6’7”).

Austin averaged 14.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG, and a combined 3.3 steals+blocks per game in two seasons while shooting 42.4% from the floor and 32.7% from 3. He could stand to be a better shooter from deep, but his athleticism is off the charts, and he’s going to finish everything around the rim with authority. Pair that with his incredible defensive ability, and you’ve got a player who could easily fit what Florida State wants to do.

We’re still waiting on some of FSU’s roster to decide what they want to do, but we have reason to believe meetings are ongoing between the staff and players. We might start seeing some movement in the portal by next week. This roster needs some fresh energy, and a player like Austin makes a ton of sense.

Florida State needs to get better defensively after their worst defensive efficiency season for as long as KenPom has been tracking it, which goes back to 1997. Fixing the defense starts with getting long, rangy athletes who can play in the gaps and defend on the weak side, which is exactly what Zack Austin is. He hasn’t set up any visits yet, but this will be one to keep an eye on. Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan State, West Virginia, and others have touched base with him as well.
