There were major shifts in the college football landscape this past transfer cycle with one of the most notable being the Colorado Buffaloes' extensive roster overhaul. More than 40 players entered the 2023 NCAA Transfer Portal under head coach Deion Sanders, who is seeking to transform his team that went 1-11 last season to one that can pass an eye test during his first year at the helm. Sanders has been scouring the depth charts of other Power 5 programs to identify players who might not be happy at their current schools, hoping to find ones that could make an impact on such a depleted roster.

Former Florida State's starting defensive end Derrick McLendon II, reserve linebacker Brendan Gant, and recently converted safety Omarion Cooper have joined Colorado through the portal. Last season, Colorado's defense graded below 35 in all but one category, with a 57.3 rating for rushing the passer, according to PFF.

There are reports that former Florida State wide receiver P.K. Sam II, who played for the 'Noles from 2001-2003, may be transferring to Colorado as well according to his social media posts.

"When you live by the portal and love on kids that used the program to go pro you end up dying from the portal. Deions gonna take 'em all. Gonna be a long season!"

Sam appeared to be referring to the most recent transfers to Colorado, and FSU's two most recent players to be drafted into the NFL: Jermaine Johnson II (New York Jets) and Jammie Robinson (Carolina Panthers). Both players joined the team via the transfer portal.

There's no question that McLendon, Gant and Cooper were valuable players at Florida State, and their addition to the Colorado roster should provide solid pieces for defensive coordinator Charles Kelly, potentially even starters. However, some have questioned the need for Sam to jaw at his alma mater (read the comments). Sam's suggestion that FSU is "dying from the portal" could be seen as embellishment given they currently have the 5th ranked transfer class per 247Sports and anchored the 11th in 2022.

Florida State had a successful 2022 season, finishing with a 10-3 record and a win over Oklahoma in the Cheez-It Bowl. They also finished ranked 11th in the final AP poll and are currently projected as a pre-season top-10 team for the 2023 season. Given this recent success, it may be difficult to argue that the team will have a "long season" as Sam suggested.

The season that most FSU fans expect would be a successful 2023 run that includes a bowl victory or conference title and potentially landing a spot in the College Football Playoff, which would give the team additional opportunities to compete and succeed. With a strong returning core and a talented group of transfers and newcomers, FSU certainly has the potential to have a "long season" this fall.
