Bowers Details "Easy Transition" Under Mike Bobo

The offseason departure of Todd Monken and subsequent promotion of Mike Bobo to offensive coordinator has raised questions, but Brock Bowers claims it has been an "easy transition."

In his first two seasons as a Georgia Bulldog, Brock Bowers has established himself as the dominant weapon in Georgia's offense, but the offseason departure of Todd Monken and subsequent promotion of Mike Bobo to offensive coordinator has raised questions about Georgia’s offensive system and Bowers’ role within it moving into 2023. Meeting with the media on Tuesday, Bowers was asked whether he had any concerns about his future role and production in Bobo’s version of the Georgia offense. Bowers admitted, “I definitely thought about that when it first came,” but went on to express excitement about his new offensive coordinator saying, “I loved Coach Bobo last year. He was always around just bringing a good vibe. He’s a really smart dude on the offensive side of the ball, so I’m happy with it.”

After serving as an analyst in 2022, Mike Bobo has been elevated to Georgia's offensive coordinator position.

According to Bowers, the familiarity with Bobo, who served as a quality control analyst with the Georgia program in 2022, has made the offensive coordinator transition a seamless one for the team: “I think it was good to have him come in that year because everyone got used to him being around and used to his personality and it wasn’t like we were bringing in a brand new face from outside not knowing a thing about it. And he knew all of us, so that kind of helped the transition, too.”

After the success of Georgia’s 2022 offense - the Bulldogs finished in the top-five nationally in points per game (41.1), yards per game (501.1), and yards per play (7.17) - under the guidance of former offensive coordinator Todd Monken, it was perhaps predictable that head coach Kirby Smart would attempt to maintain continuity with the offensive scheme and structure established by Monken by promoting Bobo from an analyst position within the program to offensive coordinator. While Bowers did concede that Bobo has “been throwing a couple of wrinkles in there of his own,” he also confirmed that Smart’s mission to maintain continuity with Monken’s highly effective offensive scheme has been successful, particularly when it comes to the language used in the offense: “He’s been doing a great job. We kept most of the same terms because it’s a lot easier of a transition. He made it an easy transition for all of us.”

As for his own role in the 2023 offense, Bowers was clear about his expectations, declaring, “I hope to be utilized almost the same way as I was in Monken’s offense.” Considering his consistently elite production and playmaking ability, Bobo would be wise to satisfy Bowers’ expectations. To this point, Bobo has done exactly that, as Bowers revealed he has been pleased with what he has seen from Bobo and his updated version of the Georgia offense: “Yeah, I like what he’s been doing, throwing a few wrinkles in there that I like.”

The coach directing Georgia’s offense may have changed heading into the 2023 season, but early returns indicate the offensive scheme and system will look and operate very similar to that which yielded consecutive National Championships for the Georgia Bulldogs.
