Beck, Georgia Offense Has Best Game At The Right Time

Georgia re-enters SEC play this Saturday at Auburn after having its best offensive performance of the season against UAB.

It wasn't always pretty, but Georgia's offense had its best collection of four quarters Saturday in the team's 49-21 victory over Alabama-Birmingham.

This performance couldn't come at a better time as Georgia resumes SEC play this Saturday against an Auburn squad that features one of the better defenses the Bulldogs will play this year.

What Went Right

For starters, Carson Beck had his best game of the season completing 22-of-32 passes for 338 yards and four total touchdowns (three passing, one rushing). He looked more comfortable in the pocket and took more shots downfield. Beck also looked more accurate on short passes, constantly putting his receivers in a position to pick up plenty of yards after the catch.

All-American tight end Brock Bowers caught nine passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Bowers re-entered the Mackey Award discussion in a big way. He bullied UAB defenders with his power and agility.

Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Dominic Lovett, and Oscar Delp also had big games, while Arian Smith scored his first touchdown of the season on a quick screen. The passing game consistently clicked in a way it hadn't yet this season.

The running game continued to progress as well, even with Kendal Milton joining Roderick Robinson on the injured list. Daijun Edwards had another solid game, scoring two touchdowns and gaining 66 yards on just 12 carries. Andrew Paul impressed in his debut, racking up 39 yards on six touches. Sevaughn Clark looked good as well.

Georgia's injury list at running back may be long, but that group doesn't lack talent. And what Clark and Cash Jones supposedly lack in talent, they add in experience as both have been around for a few years.

Lastly, Georgia had a perfect day in the red zone scoring touchdowns on all six visits. This was an area where the Bulldogs struggled in their first three games and was listed as one of head coach Kirby Smart's biggest concerns.

Needs Improvement

Maybe it's a fluke, or maybe it's a product of not taking enough deep shots in the first three weeks. Either way, Georgia needs to take advantage of home run opportunities. Beck and Co. missed two such opportunities against UAB.

Beck overthrew a wide-open Jackson Meeks in the first possession of the second quarter. On Georgia's next possession, Smith beat his man only to drop a perfect pass from Beck. However, the Bulldogs ended up scoring touchdowns on both possessions.

The good news is that players are still getting open deep downfield. Not just one guy, but several receivers are beating the defenses for what should be walk-in touchdowns.
