Georgia Baseball Sweeps Weekend Series Against UNC Asheville

The Georgia baseball program had its opener this weekend and swept the series after winning the third game on Sunday against UNC Asheville.

The Diamond Dawgs started their 2024 campaign this weekend by hosting UNC Asheville in a season-opening three-game series. This is the program's first season under head coach Wes Johnson and he is off to a fast start with his new team as Georgia swept the series after winning the final game on Sunday.

It was an offensive power showing from Georgia for the entire weekend as they posted double-digit runs in all three games. They got the weekend started with an 11-2 win on Friday, followed by a 17-5 showing on Saturday and then a shutout 10-0 win on Sunday to close out the series. The bats were hot for the entire weekend and it helped get the Bulldogs off to a promising start.

Georgia had multiple standouts over the weekend which mostly featured some strong performances at the plate. Infielder Slate Alford, a transfer from Mississippi State, compiled a very impressive weekend as he smashed three homeruns, earned six hits and tallied 9 RBIs over the three game stretch. Charlie Condon also joined in on the fun as he finished the weekend with seven hits, four runs scored and three doubles. Outfielder Dylan Goldstein had his stick running hot as well with a final series stat line of eight RBIs and two homeruns. Another Goldstein who had an impressive outing was Charlie Goldstein who started on the mound for Georgia on Friday and allowed just one run, one hit and fanned seven batters in just four innings of work.

Coach Johnson and his ball club couldn't have asked for a much better way to start the season and if the offensive showing from this weekend is an indicator of what's to come, then the Diamond Dawgs should be able to hang with anyone this year.

As they roll into the new week, Georgia will travel to Georgia State for a single-game matchup on Tuesday and then return home for another weekend series against Northern Kentucky before they take on an assortment of single-game out-of-conference opponents the following week.
