Most Important Freshmen for the 2023 Season

The 2023 season is almost upon us, and we will have plenty of new faces to see this coming season.

Every year football programs nationally see a freshman come in and make immediate impacts on the team. Even a program like Georgia that has stacked class after class of elite talent has a first-year freshman insert themselves into the lineup. In 2021, Brock Bowers made waves for the Dawgs, and in 2022 Mykel Williams and Malaki Starks did the same. This year, there could be a few different faces that could see a breakthrough.

Raylen Wilson is a 6' 1", 225 lb inside linebacker from Tallahassee, FL. Coming out of Lincoln high school, he was ranked as the No. 2 linebacker for the 2023 class. Wilson is a fast LB, clocking in at a 10.91 100-meter dash, which helped him tremendously on the field. During the 2023 G Day game, Wilson had four tackles and an interception which he returned for 21 yards. Wilson may not see a starting role immediately, but he will make an impact quickly.

Lawson Luckie is a freshman who has already made a statement in his first semester on campus. Luckie took over Georgia media with reports of how he performed during spring practices, which translated to G Day when he had three catches for 48 yards. Although UGA has one of, if not the best tight end rooms in all of college football, Luckie's already gotten thirty practices under his belt and should be prepared for play if called upon.

C.J. Allen is another freshman linebacker who could immediately impact Glenn Schumann's defense. Also 6' 1" and 230 lbs, Allen is a native of Lamar County, GA., where he had 84 tackles and over 1,600 rushing yards his senior year. During G Day, Allen racked up five tackles, the third-highest total for either team. Allen and Wilson will have to work their way into serious playing time, but both could immediately impact the roster.

Joenel Aguero is a name most in the Georgia circles followed closely during his preparatory career, being a borderline five-star prospect and all. It's a loaded defensive back room, particularly at safety this season with Javon Bullard's move back. However, Aguero's athletic traits at 6'1, 205 pounds and running consistently in the 4.3s in the forty, he could see some playing time at the STAR position early on in his career.
