Key Players From UT Martin Who Could Make An Impact on Saturday Against Georgia

The Georgia Bulldogs have begun game planning against the UT Martin Skyhawks for the start of the 2023 season. These players could impact Georgia's game plan this week.

Every game week provides a new challenge for every team competing for the national title in 2023. For Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs, their first week is against the UT Martin Skyhawks, who have a few key players who could make an impact against Georgia this Saturday, September 2nd.

In 2022, UT Martin had a 1,000-yard receiver (Colton Dowell) and a 1,000-yard rusher (Zak Wallace), but neither player is on the team anymore. Another player not on the team anymore is their starting quarterback from 2022, Dresser Winn, who went to the NFL. Cornelius Brown is likely the starting quarterback for the Skyhawks, and Glenn Schumann will make his game plan about making Brown uncomfortable in the pocket. The Skyhawks had five total receivers in 2022, averaging over ten yards per catch, so forcing the ball out of Brown's hands early will be critical.

Another part of Georgia's defensive game plan is containing the rushing game. Wallace was UT Martin's leading rusher in 2022, but his backup, Sam Franklin, rushed for 676 yards while averaging eight yards per carry. Franklin will be highlighted in the game plan this week. Shutting him down and making Brown uncomfortable, which will force bad decisions, will shut down UT Martin's offense this Saturday.

Defensively, the Skyhawks also lost their two leading tacklers from the 2022 season, Robert Hicks (110) and John Ford III (98). Their safeties, Deven Sims and Carson Evans, were the next two leading tacklers and will be the leaders of the Skyhawks' defense. Mike Bobo will coordinate his game plan around the passing game in week one, especially with the limitations and injuries to the running back room. Sims and Evans will be attacked by the four-headed monster in Georgia's receiving room.

Even though this game is considered a cupcake matchup, the Skyhawks still pose plenty of threats against the Georgia Bulldogs. You can watch the game on ESPN + this Saturday, September 2nd.
