How Georgia Could Make SEC History During the 2023 Season

The Georgia Bulldogs have a chance at making college football history in 2023. But they could make SEC history before then.

By now, Georgia's quest for a third straight national title has become a focal point for fans and media members this offseason. After all, no team in the era of modern college football has achieved such a feat.

But while Georgia is gearing up for what would be a historic national title run, many do not realize that the Dawgs are on the brink of making SEC history as well.

Georgia's 65-7 thrashing of TCU back in January capped off a perfect season for the Bulldogs and extended the team's total win streak to 17 games, which is currently the longest active win streak in all of college football. So what would another perfect season mean for Georgia's win streak?

While another perfect season for the Bulldogs won't break Oklahoma's incredible 47-game win streak which was set nearly 65 years ago. It would, however, break the SEC's record of 28 games set by the Alabama Crimson Tide during the 1980 college football season.

Since the founding of the SEC, there have been just six teams in conference history to reach a winning streak of 20 games or more. The most recent team to do so was Nick Saban's Alabama team from 2015-2016. The Tide won 26 games before their streak was spoiled by Deshaun Watson and the Clemson Tigers during the 2017 national championship.

With a relatively easy schedule to start the 2023 regular season, it is very likely that the Bulldogs become the seventh team in SEC history to win 20 games and have a strong chance at breaking the SEC’s record of 28 straight victories.
