Freshman Freak: Where Does Lawson Luckie Fit in a Loaded Tight End Room?

Where does true freshman tight end Lawson Luckie fit and find room for opportunity in a room that is loaded down with talent?

While Georgia is running hot on the recruiting trail and continues to add big names to their 2024 class, it shouldn't overshadow the list of players that were added to the roster the class prior. The Bulldogs finished with the second-best recruiting class in 2023, and it is littered with players who have the potential to impact Georgia's roster in their first season as a collegiate athletes. One of those players is tight end, Lawson Luckie.

Luckie is a former 4-star recruit and was rated as one of the best tight ends in the country coming out of high school. He was one of two tight ends to commit to Georgia in the 2023 class alongside Pearce Spurlin. And while both Luckie and Spurlin are well respected at their position, a shoulder injury that caused Spurlin to miss a good portion of spring practice is what allowed Luckie to really assert himself into the conversation this offseason.

Georgia recently has made a name for itself when it comes to reeling in and developing some of the nation's finest talents at the position thanks to Darnell Washington and Brock Bowers, and Luckie might be one of the next names to join that list in the near future. There were reports during spring practice of Luckie turning some heads which created a lot of positive buzz around his name. Now it's a matter of seeing if that continues to hold true during his first full season as a college football player.

The biggest roadblock to Luckie having an immense amount of success as a true freshman is the fact that he is on the same team as Bowers, who is arguably the best tight end in the country. Oscar Delp, a sophomore this season, also stands ahead of him on the depth chart which might limit his usage as well. However, Georgia has shown in recent years that they are not afraid to let a true freshman get after it on Saturdays if they need him to.

At the start of the 2021 season, Washington went down with an ankle injury which called for Bowers to step up and take over the position. That week one game against Clemson was just the beginning of something special. In 2022 against Ohio State, Washington went down with another injury which kept him on the sidelines and Delp tapped in to answer the call during one of the biggest moments of the season.

Of course, no one would hope that it would take an injury for Luckie to get his shot this year, it is comforting to know that they have the resources to make sure the offense doesn't miss a beat if they do get put into that situation.

While it is not expected that the true freshman tight end will take the league by storm in his first year at Georgia, it can be anticipated that he will see the field a good bit. Especially if they go on another run of blowing teams out of the water on a consistent basis as they have over the past couple of years. The Bulldogs have an embarrassment of riches at tight end this season, and Luckie certainly plays a part in that.
