Kirby Smart Smart Comments on Initial CFP Rankings

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart commented on his program being the No. 2 ranked team in the first CFP Rankings.

As the two-time defending national champion who holds a 25-game winning streak and a 41-1 record over its last 42 games dating back to the 2020 season, one could excuse Georgia if it was a bit chagrined over being skipped over for the top spot in the initial 2023 College Football Playoff rankings that were released on Tuesday night. However, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart spoke to the media during Tuesday's SEC Teleconference and said that this isn't something that they pay attention to in-house.

"Nah, not slighted. It is what it is. We've gotten really comfortable with not paying attention to it the last 3-4 years."

It's not the first time Georgia has entered the first round of rankings as the No. 1 ranked football team on both the AP Poll and the Coache's poll, only to have the selection committee place them elsewhere.

Georgia began the 2023 campaign where it ended the past two seasons - ranked No. 1. The Bulldogs have been ranked No. 1 by the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Poll since Oct. 9, 2022.

However in the first CFP rankings last year (Nov. 1), Georgia came in at No. 3 when it played host to CFP No. 1 Tennessee. The Bulldogs beat the Vols 27-13 and moved to the top spot in the CFP rankings the rest of the season.

During the 2021 campaign, the Bulldogs were No. 1 in the first five CFP rankings before finishing at No. 3 in the final following the SEC Championship Game. The Bulldogs would go on to beat No. 2 Michigan and No. 1 Alabama for its first CFP title.
