With a multitude of impact players returning from its SEC West Championship run a year ago, LSU entered the 2023 season with expectations of contending for a national championship. On Sunday, however, those expectations took a significant hit as the Tigers were humbled by a 45-24 season-opening loss to Florida State in Orlando.

LSU outplayed Florida State for much of the first half, outgaining the Seminoles 332 yards to 193 yards and taking a 17-14 lead into halftime. After the half however, the game turned as Florida State went on a 31-0 run to take a commanding lead, leading second-year LSU Head Coach Brian Kelly to wonder aloud if his team erroneously confused itself with the program that has dominated the college football landscape over the past two seasons.

"I've got to take accountability and responsibility for the way we came out in the second half. It's disappointing, but the buck stops with me and I've got to get our football team to understand and recognize that you've got to play this game for four quarters with a mentality and we just did not. For some reason, we thought we were somebody else. We thought we were the two-time national champion Georgia Bulldogs or something. I don't know what we thought, but we were mistaken."

Georgia defeated LSU 50-30 in the 2022 SEC Championship game en route to its second-consecutive national championship. The Bulldogs are looking to extend the streak to a historic three consecutive national titles this season. Despite the non-conference loss to Florida State, LSU still has an opportunity to win the SEC West and put itself in position for a rematch with the Bulldogs in this year's SEC Championship Game.
