Brian Kelly Talks Jayden Daniels Playing Through Injury Against Georgia

Dawgs Daily is here in Nashville, Tennessee, for this week's slate of SEC Media Days. Coaches and players from all 14 teams in the conference will be taking the podium to speak about the upcoming season and to provide a glimpse of what this year has in store for their program prior to the 2023 college football season being kicked off.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, LSU, Texas A&M, and Misso were the first ones up on the schedule for Monday to get things rolling. During head coach Brian Kelly's time at the podium, he was asked about quarterback Jayden Daniels playing through an ankle injury against Georgia during the 2022 SEC Championship game and how Daniels can continue to develop heading into 2023.

Here is what Coach Kelly said:

"I think that they were all a part of our learning curve with him. And quite frankly, because we knew [Daniels] as a person but we really didn't know much as a football player and how would he respond to really a new system of offense where he had to make really a 180 in terms of what he was asked to do. So what does development look like for him? I think it would be the natural progression from the last game in which he played where he was aggressive, but he was under control. He ran the ball when he needed to but yet stepped up in the pocket and made the tight window throws. I think that was the progression from what we saw in the first week where he would step up in the pocket, and run or not making those tight-window throws. And I think that that's what we saw during the year was his natural progression of understanding the offense and being more confident. We want to see that in year two."

Daniels would end up leaving the SEC Championship game after aggravating his ankle while playing against the Bulldogs. Georgia was already considered one of the best defenses in the nation at the time, so playing against that defense on a bum ankle was certainly not ideal for LSU or Daniels. Now heading into the 2023 season, Daniels and Kelly are hoping to lead the Tigers to another appearance to the SEC Championship and their first college football playoff appearance since 2019.
