Georgia vs. UT Martin: Player of the Game

After a solid week one victory that saw Georgia defeat UT Martin 48-7, a few players could be up for player of the game.

In a game filled with the first-game woes, there were still plenty of bright spots within Georgia vs. UT Martin tonight. Players like Brock Bowers set the tone for the game early with a rushing touchdown on a designed jet sweep. But one player in particular stood out to us. The player of the game from Dawgs Daily is Mekhi Mews.

Mews has been determined since spring practices to ensure that Kirby Smart and his staff knew who he was as a football player and continued this work ethic into the fall. Kirby Smart noticed his effort and gave him plenty of opportunities against the Skyhawks tonight, allowing him to be the Bulldogs' starting kick/punt returner. He didn't disappoint.

In his one kickoff return, Mews returned the ball for 31 yards to start the second half and give the Bulldogs great field position. Although the series resulted in a punt, the return is noteworthy. Mews also had two punt returns for 19 total yards, a long of 13, and an average of 9.5 yards. His efforts during fall camp also saw his name becoming a pivotal role in the receiving core, and when he got his opportunity tonight, he shined like one of the Dawgs' brightest stars.

On the day, Mews was the second leading receiver for Georgia, just behind Bowers (5 rec, 77 yds). He hauled in three catches for 75 yards and the lone passing touchdown for Carson Beck today, and the play only proves why Mews is a lethal weapon in the kicking game. Mews took a play considered a "rocket" screen pass in some offenses, made a Skyhawk linebacker miss, and was off to the races.

Mews had an exceptional game and was a big part of why Georgia could piece their offense together in the second half after they were dormant in the first half. Georgia will be back in action next week against Ball State, a game originally scheduled against Oklahoma but was canceled due to Oklahoma joining the conference next season.
