Smart Advocates for Stetson Bennett at Georgia's Pro Day

An offseason arrest has raised concerns among NFL teams regarding Stetson Bennett's character. At Georgia's Pro Day Kirby Smart defended his former QB.

With the substantial amount of NFL talent produced by the Georgia Football program in recent years, naturally, Georgia’s Pro Day brought an army of NFL scouts, coaches, and front office personnel to Athens on Wednesday to get a closer look at a number of former Georgia players. While his former players put their skills on display and met with NFL personnel in an attempt to improve their draft stock, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart met with the media to discuss the event and highlight the attributes of his former players including former Heisman Trophy finalist Stetson Bennett

After a stellar Senior season in which he led Georgia to its second consecutive college football National Championship, an offseason arrest for public intoxication has raised questions among NFL teams about Bennett’s character and the risk associated with drafting him in April's NFL Draft. When asked what questions NFL teams have been asking him and Georgia’s staff about Bennett, Smart revealed, “Strengths and weaknesses, what we think he can improve on, what we think his mental makeup is, and all those things he gets to showcase in every game he played in.”

When pressed to identify areas in which Bennett can continue to improve, Smart declined to directly answer the question, opting instead to amplify Bennett’s strengths: “Decision-making has been really good. He’s shown improvement in those. But I don’t think you pick one area and say ‘hey, he can improve in this area,’ he can improve in everything. What he has done is play at the highest level of college football for a lot of games and he’s played really well and I think that speaks volumes for him.”

Bennett’s impressive performance on the field over the past two seasons enhanced his draft stock tremendously, but a string of minor offseason incidents have raised concerns among NFL teams regarding the wisdom of committing precious draft capital to bring him into their organizations. Wednesday’s Pro Day gave Bennett another opportunity to directly assuage those concerns.
